CHAPTER TEN

As the designated half hour wound down to a few final minutes Jaime’s tension increased to fever pitch. The prospect of spending any time in Kimberly’s company terrified her but curiosity triumphed. She was loath to admit it but, Kimberly’s clever tactics had sparked her interest and now she desperately needed to discover what she was up to even if that meant spending the whole evening in her company. And they seemed to be spending a lot of time together. Everywhere she turned Kimberly was there. It was almost as if she deliberately set out to engineer their encounters. Yet why would she?

Jaime had just descended the stairs when she heard Kimberly’s Range Rover pull up but not wanting to appear too eager she paused and let Kimberly ring the ancient bell before she went to open the door.

“Are you ready?” Kimberly asked, her voice unusually guarded, while her gaze traveled smoothly over the pearly gray silk shirt and black trousers that Jaime had flung on in desperation having run out of time to look for anything more suitable.

“Yes, I am.” Jaime nodded. Kimberly had opted for her normal attire in which she looked good enough to eat – tonight a black vest under a patterned shirt, in several shades of red, and tight jeans that accentuated her long legs and neat ass. Jaime scooped up her purse and keys from the hall table, eager to be on the move, convinced that she’d feel more relaxed once they arrived at their destination and were amongst a crowd of strangers.

Although she soon had cause to revise that opinion when Kimberly escorted her into Appleyards some twenty minutes later. Finding that Kimberly’s choice of restaurant was, in fact, her own favorite eatery proved strangely disturbing.

“I didn’t realize you two were acquainted,” the waitress remarked, wide-eyed, as she ushered them to the quiet corner table that Jaime normally used and handed them the menus.

“And if I didn’t know you better,” Kimberly remarked silkily, although her expression was wary. “I’d say you were verging on being Miss Nosy Parker.”

Jaime looked from one to the other in amazement. They clearly knew each other well, but how well? Was this woman one of Kimberly’s army of lovers? Hell’s teeth! Jaime’s horror at having posed such an unsettling question stuck in her craw. What was she doing, thinking in those terms, especially as she had no valid information on which to base her assumption?

“Oh, Kim, honey! You know I’m not like that.”

Kimberly made a show of sounding unconvinced by these protestations. “Well then, maybe I should put you out of your misery and introduce you properly.”

“Jaime, meet Rebecca Appleyard. Her family owns the bistro. Rebecca, this is Jaime Fyre. Apparently she is a very distant cousin and the new chatelaine of Rykesby.”

The two women exchanged the briefest of greetings, before Rebecca turned swiftly back to Kimberly. Leaving Jaime free to speculate on the exact nature of their relationship.

“B…but I…” Rebecca stammered, her eyes popping in amazement, clearly demonstrating that she was fully aware of Kimberly’s expectations.
